Wimutti means free from birth or death - - no longer in this cycle or "nirvana". Wimuttisuk is the happiness results from nirvana. In this picture, which is one of the scene in the Lord Buddha's history, as the Lord Buddha was achieving nirvana, there was the heavy rain. When a seven-head naga (an animal looks like a serpent), that was hibernating, knew about this, he crawled out and spreaded himself as a shelter for the Buddha.
This picture has a beautiful basic composition with the seven-head naga spreaded himself over the Lord Buddha. Nevertheless, the artist modified the design of the naga's head to make it look different from the ancient painting, added the vertical lines to make the design and the main components of the picture become more cutstanding. |
