Buddhism compares the love and goodwill of parents (those who provide support frist) to children as "Phrom Viharn 4" principles which consist of:
1. Metta (loving-kindness) to extend love and goodwill towards others;
2. Karuna (compassion) to desire to help those in any kind of suffering;
3. Mudita (sympathetic joy) to be joyful about others' happiness and prosperity;
4. Upekkha (equanimity) to be emotionally stable when seeing suffering.
I compare UNHCR's work for humans suffering hardship and fleeing from war to the Phrom Viharn 4 principles.
The painting depicts the four faces of Phra Phrom (Brahma), representing each of the four principles. The hands embracing the refugees in an egg shell represent the treament of refugees according to humanitarian principles. The refugees, comprising women, men, children and the elderly, smile happily, as they are provided with good care by the protection and assistance of UNHCR. The blue and green colours represent simple Thai life under Buddhism. The Thai art represents Thailand providing shelter to refugees. In general, the painting is simple and not complicated. Simplicity represents sincerity, the Thai way of life and the principles of Buddhism. |
