Lesson 3 " Drawing Prayam Yam Design "

Prajam Yam is another important master design of traditional Thai drawing. Its general shape is the square, with the circle in the middle. It has four petals like those of the flowers. This four-petal design originated from Krajang Ta Oil Design. We can add more detail, e.g. drawing smaller designs inside it until it becomes more splendid. The shape can also be changed from a square to a rhombus. Although it looks different from the original design, it is still beautiful.

Instructions in drawing Prajam Yam Design

1. Draw a square with size as indicated in the example.

2. Draw a circle, by using a compass, with the 0.5 inch diameter. Draw both the inner and the outer circles. The line of the smaller circle must be lighter than that of the outer one.

3. Draw four petals by following the instructions in drawing Krajang Ta Oil Design (in lesson 2). You can either edge in or edge out the petals.

4. When the design is completed, add the small supporting petals at the spaces on the four corners (see example).

Remarks
1.
When you draw the petals, try not to let then go beyond the outline too much, otherwise it will be distorted. If the complete design is not as beautiful as the example, you should practice drawing Krajang Ta Oil as instructed in lesson 1 and 2 over and over until you can draw better.
2. If you wish to draw good traditional Thai designs, you have to try hard and practice a great deal. If at first you can't draw well, do not give up. Try again and again and you will finally succeed.
